Ive been holding off on getting them to see how far theyll drop. Neither team is in a particularly strong position to get to the knockouts so idk if theyll shoot up again or continue to drop.

2021.10.17 21:07 sdmz58 New World is one of the most substandard MMO's that I enjoy very much.
Disclaimer: This is just an opinion. Please don't take it to heart and if you feel otherwise, all the power to you.
That being said, to elaborate the title more - New World is one of the most generic substandard MMO's that is truly enjoyable as a solo casual player with no P2W mechanics as of now. To kind of justify the thought, I'd like to have a debate with myself on various aspects of the game -
Visuals and World -
Bad - If there was a generic MMO world building machine, this is what it would churn out. Everything is there, from forests to swamps, but nothing seems to be put there with any sort of heart or purpose. Random settlements full of zombies, suddenly merged into random ancient burial sites with palette swapped skeletons. Travel to any of the early to mid game areas and without looking at the map, tell me there's noticeable differences between the surroundings and ambience.
Good - The world looks amazing. And it's literally a new world. With their current one time purchase model and no subscription, stands to reason they'd be selling expansion packs with new areas with different flora and fauna. A world doesn't need 200 different ecosystems to work, to feel lived in, and game does that easily.
Enemies and PvE -
Bad - Bringing back the point from the previous statement, I didn't expect a company this big to rely on palette swapping enemies. Take for example, the zombies, the pirates, and the skeletons. They all have the same moves set. A slam down, a flurry of hits and a 3 piece combo. All of them the same. They all inflict either disease or bleeding. All of the animals - leopards, crocodiles, boars and wolves. Have the same model and moves. A lunge, swipes and bite. The bosses are just bigger versions of the same enemies. I mean even the dungeons, same enemies, more health. There are no world or area bosses, and PvE in general in just lacking. And don't even get me started on the hyper armor. Freaking half skeletons can stagger you with a normal attacks even when wearing full heavy armor. While only a few moves from few weapons stagger them even with a 50 or more level difference. And God forbid you walk into an area a level above yours, and agro more than a handful of enemies. They'll special move spam, stun lock you. Won't kill you, but annoying. Even combat is by the numbers. 3 skills and LMB.
Good - This wasn't designed to be a PvE focussed game. Think of it more of a Valheim kind of construct where you get your crafting and skills up, and battle for control. A mix of Conan Exiles and Eve. Where the enemies are just fodder, a means to an end and not really the main idea behind combat. When it comes to the big battles, combat simplicity is key. You wouldn't want someone spamming 50 spells during a siege. It's a simple numbers game, and ideally should work. The factors here are how many people you have who can craft you high level gear and contribute to the war. Dungeons aren't the end game, full scale wars are.
Good - Hands down one of the most engaging crafting systems ever. And the best part, it's light on the carpal tunnel syndrome patients. Circling back to the point about solo casual players, leveling up these skills are relatively easy. No Old School runescape level of grind, no Black Desert level of variety. It's crisp, clean and easy. Reaching 100 on any trade is no investment at all. You could just play the main quest and gather, mine, harvest everything you see, to reach 100 in no time. 200 is a different story, but by no means a grind. And I love how the skills are tied to your stats. A tank who might have a really easy time mining and logging might find fishing a tad tedious because of low wire strength on their fishing pole.
Bad - The recipes can be pretty screwed up at times. And currently, crafting is not profitable at all. Having things made so easy has its own disadvantages when it comes to economy. For example, I hit level 100 mining today and managed to get some starmetal. Then I realised, that my engineering skill is pretty low and started crafting some gunpowder. You know how many gunpowder batches it took me to hit 50 on engineering. A total of around 1200. That's like 20 minutes of running around caves for the bottleneck ingredient of saltpetre. Under these circumstances, why would I buy gunpowder which is selling on servers at 0.01g or buy starmetal gathering tools. Although this is fun for the early adopters, for the system to have any kind of longevity, there needs to be a gate that everyone can't or won't want to cross this easily. To be clear, not complaining, just worried.
Economy and Motivation -
On this point, I'd like to refrain from the ongoing format and put out some general thoughts. However, a TL;DR version would be - game currently doesn't feel like an MMO. As a solo player, you're under no constraints and consequently feel no motivation to participate in any of the things quintessential to a MMO. The only gold and Azoth sink currently is repair, property tax, fast travel and (optional) crafting.
For Azoth, with how easy and consistent it is to invest some 30 units into a simple steel gathering tool to craft one with over 33% chance to gain Azoth on gather, this personally doesn't feel like a chore at all. One could literally step out of a settlement with said tool, chop 100 trees and already break even on their initial investment. 100 more trees or boulders and you pay for your fast travel more or less. Corruption portals are everywhere and personally I've had every 10th or 20th enemy I kill drop 10 Azoth out of thin air. So that's taken care of.
Next to gold. Yes, this can be an issue, that is, if you want to make it so. In most other MMO's I've mentioned, the biggest gold sink is buying better gear. But, with NW's crafting system, and simplistic large scale combat end game gear is very subjective. Take for example, one of the MMO's I talked about - Black Desert. Every point of AP and DP there matters, and until you get that maximum upgraded boss gear, you'll be grinding for currency. Here, that's not the case. Definitely not for PvE as discussed and for PvP, during wars, would one really care of their sword does 500 DMG or 501 considering most people will have over 5000 health with 100 points in constitution. I mean it might, but personally don't think it will at that scale. In essence, there is no gate. I realise that yes, it's only been like a month since it came out, but the end game model doesn't seem sustainable. Not the actual endgame, the model, mind you. If they add in gated content like I mentioned, sure, it might.
Yes, I like the game. Do I think it has issues? Absolutely. I didn't even touch on the bugs. And it is exactly because I like it, that I'm worried about it. At level 25, you'd have done and seen whatever the game has to offer and with more content without changing the basic principles, you'll just be seeing and doing more of what you already have. Currently, it feels like an awesome single player experience with loads, absolutely loads to explore, craft and unravel. But, very personally, this doesn't seem like a MMO experience that will withstand the test of time. Just my two cents.
